Liquid Crystals

Innovative Solutions for Safety and Quality Control

Thermochromic liquid crystals are special items that switch colour as they warm up or cool down. When the temperature shifts, the colours move from one shade to another, so you can read them a bit like a colour strip thermometer. You will see them on temperature strips, test cards, some medical devices, battery testers and other indicators where a colour change is easier to read than a digital screen.

It is frequently printed as a thin strip on stickers, plastic film, or tiny cards. When the surface warms up, the coating reacts and the colour slowly change from one tone to the other. To read it, the user just checks which colour is showing and matches it against the small scale printed beside the strip, where each block on the strip lines up with a specific temperature. As they react quickly and do not need any power, it is useful in places that need regular or continuous temperature checks without cables, batteries or bulky instruments. They are also used in testing and development work to show hot and cold spots on a surface, for example in electronics, packaging and some medical technology.

Benefits of Thermochromic Liquid Crystals

Typically it gives a clear colour change when the temperature shifts, so they are useful anywhere you want to “see” temperature without a digital display.

Easy to read:
Different colours will emerge at different temperatures, so users just match the colour on the strip to the printed scale beside it.

No power needed:
They work without batteries, wiring or software, which makes them handy on small parts, test pieces or portable setups.

Fast response:
It respond quickly when a surface warms or cools, so hot and cold spots can be seen almost straight away.

Good for narrow ranges:
They can be made to cover specific temperature bands, which is useful for process checks, equipment testing or simple quality control.

Versatile formats:
As they can be coated onto films, labels or cards, it can fit easily into custom indicators, test strips and product labels.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What temperature range do they cover?
Each product is made for a specific range. Some show small, precise changes, while others cover a broader span.

Are thermochromic liquid crystals accurate?
If you use the right range for your application, yes — they can be very accurate.

Can they be used outdoors?
Some can, but direct sunlight or extreme heat may affect the colours. It depends on the grade.

Can the temperature range be customised?
Yes. Many suppliers can tailor the range to fit your exact needs.

Are they suitable for medical devices?
Yes, they’re often used in products that track temperature of the skin as well as other non-invasive tools.

What colours do they show?
They typically move through colours like black, red, green, and blue as the temperature shifts.

How should I store them?
Store them somewhere cool and dry, and try to keep them out of direct sunlight so the colours stay stable.
